Huffman
Golf Classic
Join us on July 17, 2026, at the Towanda Golf Club!
The Huffman Golf Classic is one of the Foundation’s longest-standing and most
meaningful fundraising events—combining friendly competition, community spirit, and
a shared commitment to supporting educational opportunities for Wyalusing students.
Why We Play
In 2008, the Wyalusing Area Education Foundation established the inaugural golf tournament to help fund the annual sixth-grade trip to Washington, D.C. Each year, approximately $50,000 is needed to make the trip possible.
Through the tournament’s success, the Foundation contributes toward transportation costs, averaging about $25,000 annually—ensuring every student has the chance to experience this unforgettable opportunity.
A Tradition Worth Preserving
The Washington, D.C. trip began in the early 1970s, when Jeanne Elliott, Carl Whitehead, and David Weaver took the first Wyalusing Elementary class to the nation’s capital. By 1974, students from Camptown, Laceyville, and New Albany elementary schools joined the journey, and it soon became a rite of passage for all Wyalusing sixth graders.
The purpose of the trip extends far beyond sightseeing. It’s a chance for students to:
- Experience city life—riding subways, escalators, and elevators for the first time.
- Interact with people from different cultures.
- Apply classroom lessons to real-world history and government.
Students and teachers spend months preparing, studying the sites they’ll visit—including Arlington National Cemetery (where students participate in the wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier), the U.S. Capitol, Smithsonian museums, monuments, memorials, and even the National Zoo.
For many, it’s a life-changing experience—and one the Foundation is proud to help sustain year after year.
Honoring Jim Huffman
In 2018, we lost Jim Huffman, a beloved educator, colleague, and friend whose legacy continues through this tournament.
Born in Towanda and a lifelong resident of Sugar Run, Jim was a proud Wyalusing Valley High School Class of 1980 graduate. He spent nearly his entire teaching career in the Wyalusing Area School District—first as an art teacher, then as a sixth-grade teacher, inspiring generations of students until his retirement in 2017.
His passion for education, creativity, and connection with his students left an enduring mark on our community. It is in his honor that this tournament now bears his name—the Huffman Golf Classic—continuing his spirit of dedication and support for Wyalusing students.
